Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind develops strategies to deal with budget cuts
A bell sounds as Blake Lindsay opens the door to the industrial structure of Dallas Lighthouse for the Blind , signaling the seven steps that lie in front of him.
Inside the building, more than 150 blind and visually impaired employees employment together making products such as highlighters, binders and eyeglass cases for military, federal and say governments and commercial customers.
Lindsay, 45, from start to finish blind since infancy because of Retinoblastoma, a cancer of the eyes, has been the communications foreman at Dallas Lighthouse for two years. With a background in both radio and client service, he frequently speaks with groups of all ages about overcoming a powerlessness and how to successfully set and achieve goals and dreams.
“Our job is to get out in the community and reprove people these aren’t barriers, these are obstacles, and we can get around them,” Lindsay said.
The 50,000-right-angled-foot facility, located on Capital Avenue, is the largest guv for the blind and visually impaired in North Texas. But, due to the slump, the private non-profit organization has had to develop new strategies for funding. Contributions from organizations like the Pooled Way, individual donations and federal and state grants have fallen, causing Dallas Lighthouse to play-act changes and get creative with the funds that they have.
Thieves go after pricey eyeglasses in robbery string
Optometrist Dr. Philip Steiner has been in the problem for 30 years of business and was shocked at the blatant shoplifting.
"Impertinent, I mean very brazen and very professional,” said Steiner. “I express they knew what they were doing … They came in when we were really active and we weren't exactly watching them for stealing.”
Fairfax County the fuzz are examining surveillance pictures that they say show suspects swiping grave-priced glasses frames. The thieves allegedly hit at least four divers stores in Falls Church, Great Falls, and Alexandria.
At least two suspects, a man and a chain, enter each store. One distracted the store employee while the other swaps out architect eyewear with an inexpensive pair.
In several cases, the suspects stole six pairs, each one value over $100.
"People don't realize that just one penny can shape a difference, so I can only imagine how much hundreds of dollars worth of retail just one piece of merchandise can affect a business,” a denizen said.
