Craft Show showcases Christmas trinkets

Visitors peered through a ban tube at the jellyfish floating in crystalline epoxy and marveled at the bright colors.

Jimmy Fortenberry of TheAmazingJellyfish.com is selling jellyfish art sculptures at the 22nd annual Quad-Cities Christmas Artfulness Show at the QCCA Expo Center. The show features 185 booths of handcrafted items made and displayed by artists from as far away as Alabama and Texas.

“The jellyfish are all honest,” he said. The sea creatures used in the sculptures are raised in aquariums and accustomed to him after they die of natural causes. Many types of jellyfish are equipped with bioluminescence, or the know-how to glow. In the wild, that ability gives them an additional way to frighten predators, he said.

Fortenberry said his drudgery has evolved from casting bugs and butterflies to casting jellyfish over the gone several years, and the sculptures can be used as paperweights. The 2008 covering “Seven Pounds” with actor Will Smith caused a be elevated in the popularity of jellyfish, he said.
