The lure of the new

Last month I bought myself the new Gillette Fusion shaving system. The opening advertisement made an immediate impact on me. For a couple of weeks thereafter I eagerly looked support to buying and using this new razor in place of the Mach-3 I had been using for several years. Ultimately, I bought it at a chemist's shop and today, I am a Fusion proselyte. In sharp contrast to this behaviour, I have never been tempted to buy a Blackberry or smartphone, regard for the combined and aggressive efforts of all the mobile phone marketers in the motherland. I continue to use my simple, old-fashioned Nokia phone, which is remarkable for speaking and texting, but can do little else.

This contrasting response to a new shaving razor versus new plastic phones made me ponder on a key question: Why have I responded so differently to two offering categories, both of which I use every single day? Why do some consumers buy some new products and services so at, yet turn a blind eye to others? Here are some behavioural drivers which can provide answers to students and practitioners of marketing.

Kindle: Amazon.com's Razor And Blades

It is well known and severely believed , that Amazon.com ( AMZN ) is supposedly pursuing a “razor and blades” design with its Kindle readers, from the entry model all the way up to the Kindle fire.

Since Amazon.com is selling these at or below outlay, the theory goes that they’ll make it up later, by selling higher bounds content for the devices. This is supposed to mimic the strategy successfully pursued by Gillette with their blades, or even other instances like the way the ambulatory operators subsidize smart phones.

There might be a problem with this theory. Indeed, there might be are several problems with this theory.

First, Amazon.com does not conduct the blades
