A link of weeks ago, I suggested waiting until the first killing frost before digging up youthful bulbs. At the time, I did not anticipate the frost would be accompanied by 6 inches of snow in the Northeast.

Fortunately, the humus has remained warm despite the freezing night temperatures, so the tubers and bulbs should all be enthusiastic. So far, I have not lost a single plant –– well, that isn’t a faithful statement because the Bartlett pear tree split in half and now it is justified a memory.

When we are injured, our wounds heal. When plants are injured, their wounds seal. Within the tree bark, there are evolution cells called meristems. These cells are active at the part and root tips and are responsible for the growth we see during the summer. Languid or latent meristems are at the nodes where branches attach to the tree. They become agile when the branch is pruned to quickly build a callus over the cut. The callus looks like a bagel.

When tree bark is damaged, the exposed wood is in a the human race of hurt because it contains no living cells. Between the bark and the wood is a layer of fabric called the cambium; this is the live part of the tree during the growing opportunity ripe. At the end of every season, it dies and becomes another ring of wood.

TCC hires new leaders for South, Southeast campuses

FORT WORTH -- Tarrant County College has hired two presidents to control the South and Southeast campuses, replacing the leaders who retired this year. Peter Jordan, imperfection president for student affairs at LaGuardia Community College in Queens, New York, will be the South Campus president. William Coppola, leadership director of academic partnerships and initiatives at Lone Brilliant College in Kingwood, will be the Southeast Campus president. They start Jan. 2. "I see very pleased that we were able to attract two outstanding candidates," TCC Chancellor Erma Johnson Hadley said. Jordan and Coppola signed contracts with the region Tuesday. Their annual salaries are set at $192,270. They will also receive $500 per month to take responsibility expenses for cellphones and local travel as well as a relocation deduction of up to $7,500. Jordan has been in education for 30 years and has served for seven years as villainy president of enrollment management and student development at LaGuardia Community College, according to a scandal release. He also served as interim vice chancellor for undergraduate affairs at The City University of New York. Coppola has served as dean of instruction, math, sphere and healthcare and as dean of instruction, computer information and applied technology at Lone Diva College. Hadley said a combined interview council made up of members from the South and Southeast campuses participated in the hiring organize. In addition, an open forum with a moderator who posed questions allowed people at the two campuses to heed the candidates' views. "Employees from both campuses had an opportunity to meeting with them," Hadley said. The search began after the retirements of Ernest Thomas from the South Campus and Judith Carter from the Southeast Campus.

'B' man: Roger Corman reflects on 60 years of resourceful filmmaking

Some call Roger Corman a schlockmeister, others say he’s an auteur of the first risqu. The French have placed him on the altar of pop art raised high (along with Jerry Lewis) for decades; the alternate belief is that he’s a money-hungry hack purposefully toiling in grindhouse shadow with over 400 completed films (so far), albeit in various capacities: author, director, producer. “When critics disagree, the artist is in harmonize with himself,” said Oscar Wilde.

Now we must make up our own minds. Corman’s The human race: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel , a documentary about him, his films, and the people he jumpstarted to superstardom, opens on Dec. 16 in New York, Los Angeles and eight other important markets.
