Local charities feel pinch as donor fatigue, economy take toll

How much coinage will clink in Victoria Durham’s undersized red kettle this holiday season?

It remains to be seen. Durham is thrilled rightful to get paid minimum wage to ring that Salvation Army bell and brace at Walmart shoppers.

“I’m enjoying myself,” said Durham, a sedate court graduate who’s been clean and sober for six months. “My pail is making money and I’ve got a job.”

But Debbie Daggett of Vancouver hesitated before she dropped in a dollar. Her sister is losing her almshouse, she said, and that dollar could be useful handling that family emergency. “I do it every year and I will do it this year,” she said of her kettle contributions, “but times are a lot harder now.”

Kim Gray didn’t have to have in mind about it. She fished out some change and sent over her daughter, Amelia, to beat a hasty retreat the deposit. It was a teachable moment, she said.

“I feel we’re very favourable,” Gray said. “We don’t have a fancy car or mirage house by any means, but we are thankful for what we have. All our bills are paid. We can better other people who aren’t as fortunate as we are.”

Survivors remember those lost to violence

Seated in the front row of the courthouse, green Brooklyn Davis held a decorated picture casing bearing the picture of her “Uncle Trey” LePelley.

LePelley was killed in 2005. Brooklyn’s old woman Heather Davis said her family comes every year to reminisce over her cousin. Flanked by her friend, Trey’s parents and grandparents, Davis said the holidays are intricate when someone so close is no longer at the dinner table.

“This is a way to memorialize and make sure people don’t forget,” Davis said. “I like to tolerate victims’ rights efforts because they were very good to us during the whirl.”

During the ceremony, District Attorney Michael Jimerson spoke about the victims and families with whom he’s worked as he dedicated the tree.

“We’re proud to be in the fellowship of people where we don’t call the trials by the name of the criminals, we call them by the names of the victims who suffered at their hands,” Jimerson said.
