DO MARKETERS think that men or women are more expected to swallow a higher price tag? With a mission to see if that extra X chromosome extremely makes things different for girls, we hit the supermarket aisles, skin of one's teeth salons and call centre queues and found out that the price you pay often depends on your gender.

First up is a dance to the supermarket health and beauty isle where there were one or two surprises in cache. When it comes to deodorant, razors, facial wash and shower gel in the same enormousness and from the same manufacturer, it is in fact the girls who get the better deal. Comparing our men’s and women’s shopping baskets of seven items on rummage sale at both Superquinn on Sundrive Road and on Tesco.ie, it’s men who pay the higher rate for being clean, fresh-smelling and fuzz free.

Sweet smell of success as Simon cleans up with skincare for men

Most men who have a shrouded rummage through their girlfriends' bathroom cabinets emerge with a dollop of de luxe moisturiser or face wash. But when Simon Duffy did at best that six years ago, he surfaced with inspiration for a new male skincare trade mark. The result was Bulldog, whose moisturisers, shower gel, aftershave balm and more now bring on in revenues of £3 million a year from its Ladbroke Grove establish.

"The idea came about when I realised that all the products that my girlfriend - now trouble - used were natural, with no nasty chemicals, but when I went to find some for myself, there was nothing on the shelves," explains Duffy, who is 35 and from Movie queen's Park. "When I asked a shop assistant, she told me to use women's skincare products as a substitute for. I was shocked. And since I'd always wanted to start my own business, I thought this could be the gap in the exchange I needed."

At the time, Duffy was working on product evolution for corporates such as Starbucks and Samsung. But he soon arranged to answer his friend Rhodri Ferrier, then an investment banker at UBS, to talk about his profession idea. "I thought he was very shrewd and would be great to have on board - but he told me my end was stupid. So I bought him a few more beers. He was soon convinced," laughs Duffy. "By the end of the evening, we'd agreed to become charge partners."

'Offensive' Lynx adverts banned by advertising watchdog

The flier for Lynx shower gel showed a woman in a bikini under a shower at a beach, with the headline: "The cleaner you are the dirtier you get."

The 113 complainants said it was sexually suggestive, demeaning to women, and inapt for public display because it could be seen by children. Some of the complainants reported they had seen the broadsheet near schools.

In its adjudication, the ASA concluded the poster was "acceptable to be considered offensive by many members of the public, particularly those who were accompanied by children".

But the ASA said two TV ads in the crusade, featuring a group of women in bikinis, were unlikely to motive offence because they had timing restrictions to protect children.

Five internet adverts for Lynx Dry Full Put down deodorant, which featured model Lucy Pinder, attracted 15 complaints.

The adverts, shown on sites including Yahoo, Hotmail and Spotify, showed Ms Pinder eating an ice lolly, stripping wallpaper or bending over an oven door.
