Call for investigation into Ryan's OPI testimony

The Victorian Opposed is keeping the pressure on the Police Minister, Peter Ryan, to detail his involvement in the capitulation of the former police chief commissioner, Simon Overland.

Mr Ryan told the Thing of Police Integrity (OPI) he was unaware of meetings between his staffers and higher- ranking police, in a plot to destabilise Mr Overland's position.

The Antipathy Leader Daniel Andrews says he will ask Parliament today to create a committee to investigate Mr Ryan's evidence to the OPI.

"Peter Ryan says he knew nothing, Bill Tilley says differently. That is at the heart of this," he said.

"If the Legate Premier didn't know anything, we could well have a debate on whether he's incompetent and that he ought to have known."

Attorney Worldwide Robert Clark has labelled the plan as a "political deed."

Mr Clark says the matter has already been properly investigated.

"We have a complicated expert investigation by the OPI who've looked at the primary evidence, looked at it in fine fantastic detail, have covered whatever they thought was appropriate in their report to Parliament," he told ABC particular radio .

Rendering TONY JONES, PRESENTER: Victoria's Police Cleric Peter Ryan is under intense pressure tonight after two of his closest advisors were calculated to resign because of a damning report by the police watchdog.

The Purpose of Police Integrity found ministerial advisor Tristan Weston, assisted by orderly secretary Bill Tilley, plotted to bring down the then chief commissioner Simon Overland.

Labor asks Bill to cross floor

In an opinion piece in today’s The Periphery Mail the Victorian Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews says the Reformer member for Benambra has been labelled a liar by his government’s substitute leader Peter Ryan and no one in his party is willing to shelter him.

He says Mr Tilley should cross the floor and vote with Labor to organize the truth between the evidence he gave an Office of Police Virtue investigation into the plot to overthrow then-police commissioner Simon Overland and Mr Ryan’s construct of events.

Mr Andrews will call for a further investigation when Parliament resumes next week, but needs Mr Tilley’s desire support to get it across the line.

But Mr Tilley, having resigned his deputy policewomen minister role to Mr Ryan in the wake of the OPI report, says he won’t be swapping teams.
