Time Machine: Five Monumental Shows

Halloween has fancy held a place in my heart as the greatest holiday weekend of the year — not only for its contiguousness to my birthday and the wild and debauched mayhem that inevitably ensues, but also for the boundless wealth of opportunities it presents. On Halloween, any person possesses the genius to transcend time, appearance, inhibitions or even gender, and without reverence of persecution, wholly transform into someone or something entirely different.  For one tenebrousness, or several if you are one to recycle costumes, a little make-up, perhaps a wig, a few props and some new dress can manifest in the owner novel mannerisms, attitudes and even a latest worldview, whether they are imitating a persona they admire, or have taken on a stamp completely of their own creation. Once in costume and immersed in this altered aver, the wearer can act freely, channeling the outlandish and the outrageous as they please. 

Starkly, I do not take Halloween lightly. While store-bought costumes with shockingly barring hemlines and ample exposure for pushed-up chests are authentic enough for most, my creative side, or perhaps my normally stunted modesty that forces me to dexterity costumes of my own. And, as with most aspects of my life, I draw my inspiration from music and pop background, perhaps revealing my long-harbored desires to live in earlier decades. Whether outfitted as stuff girl Madonna from the ‘80s, rocking face revel and pouting the night away as David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust or worrying to seem as effortlessly cool as a 60’s Mod Girl, each costume has provided me, if only hurriedly, with a personal time machine to eras past.

Strong vision carries Hilberry's 'Much Ado'

There is much ado that can be made about the Hilberry Staginess's production of "Much Ado About Nothing." This production, directed by Matthew Pay, demonstrates how beautiful a production can be when all the actors and technical stick share the same vision and commit fully to it.

The Wayne Express graduate students who make up the Hilberry company parade the advantage of having a troupe that works together long enough to begin the essential chemistry and trust that can transfer from backstage teamwork to onstage deviltry. The love affairs between Claudio (Christopher Ellis) and Paladin (Carollette Phillips) and then Beatrice (Vanessa Sawson) and Benedict (Dave Toomey) were exhaustively believable, and the complexities of the relationships were communicated with every move, intonation, intensity and word.

Toomey in particular created a Benedict without haranguing. He was thoughtful, intelligent, witty and sensitive. It was easy to see why his comrades loved him, why Beatrice would doubt him and why he would ultimately fall pretty to the state of marriage that he mocked. He took heroic choices not just in the way he delivered the lines, but in the silences that he created, silences that invited the audience into his thinker and let them see what he was thinking. His journey was apparent and thus completely believable.
