Veterans deserve more than lip service

For the servicemen and women of our armed forces who are killed abroad, the memorials and parades surrounding Veterans Day are meaningless. The fallen are beyond the reach of such ceremony and praise; any sentiment of appreciation is spoken to deaf ears. And while we may brush aside such a counterintuitive notion, in truth, we honor the casualties of war for the better of the living.

Whether it is to console the grieving families of the deceased or to alleviate our own feelings of blame, any tributes made for the soldiers lost are at least in part a form of penance. However, the out are primarily remembered to prove to the active military and veterans that they will not be forgotten, and that their willingness to up the ultimate sacrifice is recognized and valued.

When respect for those killed in power is disregarded, we become incensed. The recent revelations that the mortuary at Dover Air Cogency Base lost body parts and committed other shocking acts against service members killed in Afghanistan and Iraq are not exempt from our malignity. In at least two cases, small fragments of a soldier’s remains were misplaced. In another event, a Marine killed in a bomb blast was returned to Dover where employees at the mortuary were tasked with placing his main part in uniform for one final viewing by his family. The soldier’s injuries were so mean that the workers were at first unable to do this. As a rather grisly solution, and without the family’s accede, a fairly large portion of bone was sawed off from the soldier’s left-hand arm. Adding to these atrocities, it was discovered that the ashes of an unknown covey of war dead were disposed of in a Virginia landfill. An Air Force questioning determined that the mortuary was rife with such failures and deficiencies, and placed the criticize largely on three top officials. Inexplicably, not one of these officials was fired.

Davis: Younger Americans need older generations' values, ideals

Recently, I watched shoppers at a resident mall and noticed a stark contrast in dress between 20-somethings and those with mellifluous hair. Many of the younger generation donned rings in their nose, lip, or other places. They wore baggy pants, damned short skirts or shorts, and immodest or crude shirts (untucked). Sharing the footpath were members of the elder generation. While clothes may be the least of their concerns (Medicare, inflation, dwindling retirement funds), they had neatly tucked in their shirts.

This awareness gave birth to a realization that the values, ideals -- even reprove -- of the oldest living generation may not be shared by those who exemplify the future of America. According to a Pew Research Center memorize, when asked what characteristics make their generation unique, Millenials said "technology use, music/pop enlightenment, liberalness/tolerance, and clothes." Members of "The Greatest Reproduction" answered "WWII, Depression, honesty, work ethic, and values/ morals." By the way, both generations -- as did members of Generation X and Baby Boomers -- listed that their begetting was unique because they were "smarter."
