If the St. Smudge's Green Team gets its way, trees will become the pillars of their children's edification.Led by Catherine Wright, the Green Team is a group of "wonderful" and "passionate" mothers united by their determination to make their kids' out of doors learning experience just as valuable as their indoor one.
But with their Cloverhill Avenue schoolyard in south Etobicoke consisting of just specific, a chain-link fence and eight trees, that dream seemed a long-way-off one - until the group banded together to put forth a proposal to the Majesta Trees of Learning contest.
Now St. Mark's is a top-10 finalist in the competition, which has schools from across the hinterlands vying online for a $20,000 grand prize towards bringing their welcome sight for an outdoor learning space to life.
"We want to mutate St. Mark's from the outside in, and the inside out to become green leaders in our community," said Wright, a former altered consciousness school math and science teacher whose daughter Draven is in Upgrade 2 at St. Mark's.
