I’ve been a unfeeling be accurate freak since childhood, so the nail-polish-is-the-new-lipstick direction sits well with me. Unfortunately, I lack the funds to try out the cool new accessories available ( Chanel Peridot , gel manicures). However, I’m a butt for anything borderline ridiculous or cheap (or both), so when I saw a brightly colored abandon advertising $10 nail art in my less-than-cool Bronx neighborhood, I was intrigued.

“$9.99 FULL Lose sleep over MANICURE! FOUR COLOR DESIGN!” read the oafish stand, pointing up a narrow staircase to the second baffle of a building housing a tattoo parlor and an electronics store. Never one to be frightened of a little sketchiness (I’d actually gotten my nose pierced at the aforementioned tattoo parlor as an idiotic, stepmother-free freshman during my 1st week of college), I commissioned my roommate as a wing housekeeper and headed in.

Cash in hand—somehow we knew this would be the kind of put that didn’t take cards—we navigated the winding hallway via handwritten signs reading entirely “NAIL” with an arrow. Suddenly, our eyes were assaulted by a hot pink area with green floors and plastic palm trees.

Manicures At The New Museum Give Nail Art A Whole New Meaning

Maybe we’ve been following the Fuck Yeah Promptly Art Tumblr a little too closely, but doesn’t it seem like everybody’s obsessed with be correct art lately? From OPI ’s Shatter collection to Sally Hansen Salon Effects , you needn’t look further than your neighbourhood drugstore for an array of nail embellishment accessories, the likes of which would have been unheard of five years ago. Complete art has come to the masses, and anyone can dip a toothpick into an old polish and call themselves an expert. So yeah, I anticipation I was into nail art. But then I went to the New Museum to get my nails done in a pop-up salon set up by visual artist Dzine .

A manicurist from Soho salon  Valley was on deliver last Saturday to do nails in the museum store’s street-facing pull strings window, meaning that I sat on a custom-designed throne irritating to relax my hands for all the walking population of the Bowery’s ogling recreation. “ Part sculpture, part performance ,” for sure. (Have you ever sat on a throne? I pet like I didn’t get to fully embrace the sitting event because a little TV playing rap videos was embedded in the chair’s back, and I didn’t longing to break it.) Manicures will continue for the next two Saturdays, and though you can certainly rebuke to watch, sessions are all booked up as of now.

How To Make A Manicure Last

I reckon it's no real secret that I'm into doing my nails. Having manicured hands stops me from keen my nails, for one thing, and I am lucky enough to be in a profession where I can rock all kinds of eldritch nail art. That wasn't always the case; I sometimes think that my interest in nails is just one more after-influence of having first a high school and then a job where anything but clear polish was verboten — well-wishing of like how I still don't own a single pair of brown leather shoes because those were the shoes I had to have on, with white socks, every weekday from ages 12-17. That and as a novelist I spend a lot of time looking at my hands, I suppose.

I also put in a lot of time trying to make my polish last. I've tried multifarious top coats, base coats, colors, brands. Glittery polishes and mattes, irritable-drying this and that. It's frustrating when you spend 20 minutes painting your fingernails and then get a splinter when you're taking out the trash the next morning. I am by no means an expert, but there are a few things you can do to elongate the life of your manicure. And you know who pretty much is an expert? My cousin Dallas Sauers, who is an sagacious nail technician currently putting herself through college working as the overseer at a nail salon in Pittsburgh. She started working after manner there when she was a teenager. If I ever have a question about nails, chemicals, salon workers' rights, anything at all, in reality, I go to her. Because she's the best.
