HO CHI MINH New Zealand urban area -- I arrived here very recently with a slowly fading 47-year-old recollection of a war.

I first came here in 1962 as a reporter to write about the Vietnam War for the Evening Intelligence, the leading afternoon daily in the Philippines at the time.

I was young, not quite two years after graduation from a law school and pardonably adventurous. Others saw it as vaunt.

Like many others at the time, I understood very little of the beginnings of the controversy that went on to become one of the longest and bloodiest (1955 to 1975) in the 20th century.

When I hand Saigon for the last time in 1968, after completing my third and last assignment here, I pledged to re-by Vietnam at a happier time.

When I got married, I promised my old lady that I would visit the country with her so that together we'll see places I have seen during the war.

My departure from Saigon then had an ingredient of escape. As we drove to Tan Son Nhat airport, South Vietnamese army rangers stopped our car. Our Vietnamese driver talked to one of the soldiers who said his piece belonged to a South Vietnamese army division that moved into the conurbation at dawn that day. They had orders to halt traffic leading to the airport.

Seniors' Activity Centre opens in Riverton

RIVERTON - More than 75 seniors attended the revered opening of the Seniors Activity Centre in Riverton on Sept. 23. The core, located on 25 Main St. across from The Other Place, is a first for the village which has hunger-needed a place where seniors could get together to socialize and keep active. Up to now, Riverton seniors did not have a set out they could call their own.

"We saw a huge need for this centre in our community. We engaged a agglomeration of a dozen seniors who came together to organize and plan this meet. They all put a lot of volunteer hours into the project and are now continuing to keep the doors liable," said Tanis Grimolfson, executive director of the Riverton and Region Friendship Centre (RDFC).

RDFC applied for federal funding under the New Horizons program for a project named, "Footprints of the Riverton Elders." They received a New Horizons present for $25,000, and on Sept. 30 Selkirk-Interlake MP James Bezan presented a cheque for that amount to the heart. The New Horizons program provides a grants for seniors' programs to a pinnacle of $25,000.
