With a background in commercial and documentary filmmaking, he wanted to a note a movie that was cheap enough that he could convince someone to let him direct it. The budget would order it to be confined in place and time, and probably a character over.

"I came up with this conceit of locking these investment bankers in on the vespers all the time when one of them thinks that he has found out that the world is coming to an end," he says.

After carrying around the fantasy for the movie in his head for more than a year, the actual writing came quick. "I wrote the thing in four days under tremendous duress, frankly," he says. "I was doing job interviews to go to travail in a totally different field."

His goal of a small large screen ended up being a boon rather than a constraint for the type of story he wanted to report. A short shooting schedule of 17 days and the complex characters in his teleplay attracted a stellar cast.
