Q My belle woe is age spots.  Or whatever you call them – they’re two brown patches on the side of my cheeks, very much pale now but I am worried they will get worse. Does anything help?

A Well, firstly, they are rightly called hyperpigmentation. But as you say, they are known by a range of common names, from age or sun spots to brown or liver spots. It all comes to the same point. (What they’re not is freckles.)

So far we’d say the beauty industry hasn’t not fail up with a real solution.  However, when we talked to dermatologist Dr Justine Hextall recently in London, she told us she’s impressed with the new Clinique commodity called Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector, £39 for 30ml. Clinique market it for uneven husk tone, which is a techie way of describing the development of an area which is darker in hue than the surrounding skin, according to the brand’s guiding dermatologist Dr David Orentreich.
