Steve Martin, Owen Wilson, and Jack Black star in 'The Big Year'
Both men have their sights set on Owen Wilson's knavish Kenny, a successful contractor whose 732 bird sightings is the accepted world record. Even though none of these guys is ready to kick the bucket, "The Big Year" has an unmistakable closeness with " The Bucket List ," another bromance that attempted the calisthenic accomplishment of simultaneously tickling our funny bone, plucking our heartstrings, and draining our dart ducts. The problem is that director David Frankel and screenwriter Howard Franklin , working off a nonfiction list by Mark Obmascik , are experts at neither tickling, plucking, nor draining.
Birding, at least as practiced by the skin's trio, is more than a hobby; it's a passion. But passion is what is AWOL from "The Big Year." The film's low-key geniality is pleasant enough, but what's missing is the comedy, the nuttiness, of infatuation. When Henry Fonda as a herpetologist in "The Lady Eve" said "snakes are my existence," we could laugh at his ardor while still, at the same time, admiring him for it. Consideration a few obligatory speeches about the wonder of it all, the men in "The Big Year" are mostly into birding to win big. Birding here is about being the most desirable that you can be at something, which means, in the film's touchy-feely parlance, conclusion out who you really are.

When I heard the three stars of the coat were to be Steve Martin, Owen Wilson and Jack Black, I worried even more.
My old lady and I saw "The Big Year" (directed by David Frankel, 99 minutes) last week, and my fears disappeared. We loved it. I concede, I can't be an objective observer because I really wanted to like this flick picture show. I give it three stars out of four.
Clearly the movie targets birders. And every reaction I've read from birders has been positive. I just hope the non-birding community gives it a chance.
"The Big Year" is a rare film, and not well-deserved because of the subject matter. It is a gentle, light-hearted comedy that lacks pitiless language, bathroom humor, violence and chase scenes. I probable these elements find their way into many movies because they require little original compassion.
