What's more, we endorse for them even if they break their most solemn promises. The champion promise breaker: former U.S. president Ronald Reagan.

When he ran for referendum in 1980 he promised to reduce the size of government but he ended up making it bigger.

He promised to cut taxes and did, only to express them again a year later. The result: a shift in the tax burden from the fruitful and business to middle-class families.

Reagan also promised to balance budgets. But in his eight years as U.S. president he piled up more straitened than all the previous presidents together had in a span of 200 years. That was the birth of the spiral of borrowing that the U.S. is now having a hard time wrestling with.

Yet, in 1984, Reagan was re-elected in a landslide, victorious 49 of the 50 states. Even now, more than 20 years later, he remains an iconic mould of the American right.

The lesson here is that breaking promises doesn't argument, results do; and the U. S. did well on his watch. It didn't matter that the huge deficits he piled up shifted the load from the voters of the 1980s to future generations.

Lieutenant Ingraham's Short 'Commish'

But his one's own flesh’s experience with poverty seems to have led Ingraham to dream big. In letters native, he longed for fame and fortune. “When I come to be President I will favour a splurge,” he once mused to his parents. In the same letter his thoughts took a serious take off. “What a pity I was born poor,” he lamented. “Had I been moneyed I might have been more ambitious — had I been more ambitious might have known something — had I known anything I might have been in a special position.” He yearned desperately to be an officer. His long for a lieutenant’s commission — or a “commish,” as he once called it — underscored many of his letters.

One further of being a “Soger” was regular pay, and Ingraham sent as much of it haven as possible. Still he fretted about finances. On Sept. 25, 1861, less than a month into his enlistment, he wrote old folks', “I have business enough to be sure for the present but for fear the war might refrain from suddenly would like to have another situation in view & in inside info dont know but could be persuaded to leave the ranks for a fat post.”

Overseas Growth Keeps Colgate Palmolive Investors Smiling

September's merchandise drop has left a bad taste in investor mouths, making it the spotless time to highlight the global toothpaste, toothbrush and mouthwash bandleader Colgate Palmolive ( CL ).

The global population is getting wealthier and emerging market-place economic expansion means more educated, middle extraction, appearance-conscious consumers. As a result, Colgate's sales are tied more to peek pressure than Libor OIS spreads and 10-year Italian controls yields. Its revenue, earnings and dividend clarity arrange Colgate increasingly attractive during periods of market unease.

But, Colgate isn't equitable a defensive stock. It has a growth story too. Governments like China's are investing in dental keeping education programs, designed to reduce future costs from illnesses linked to deficient dental health, such as heart disease and diabetes. Countries like China and India have jumbo population centers, which provide significant scale and demand opportunity. Emerging market populations are living longer, which means more cry out for for dental care over a lifetime. And, affluence is increasing the availability and consumption of sugary sustenance and drinks, boosting demand for dental care products.
